International Competition - Piazzale degli Alpini

— STEFANO CORBO STUDIO —

The proposal for the regeneration of Piazzale degli Alpini in Bergamo, northern Italy, aims to transform an abandoned area into a complex ecosystem capable to redefine traditional categories such as nature vs. city, interior vs. exterior, individual vs. collective.

The end result is a constellation of micro-spaces –each one with its own functions– where architecture works as a medium among distinct agents.
The existing vegetation is preserved and integrated into the design of the new square. All around the trees and other plant species, different covered spaces host multiple facilities: market, areas for concerts and manifestations, bar, restaurant, info-centre, multimedia point.

If the planimetric configuration of the square is apparently homogeneous and continuous, its volumetric articulation expresses complexity and fragmentation.
Nature, city and architecture can coexist within a hybrid environment.
